UPDATE 9:15 p.m.
A quick attack by air support appears to have significantly slowed the fire’s spread.
The fire is now emitting very little smoke and is just barely visible over the ridge from the valley below.
The BC Wildfire map has placed the fire at Clarke Creek, on the ridge between Oyama and Wood lakes. It is a half hectare in size.
While social media posts suggest the Oyama Lake Lodge was placed on standby due to the fire in the area, no formal evacuation alerts were actually issued by the regional district.
ORIGINAL 8:20 p.m.
A new wildfire has been spotted near Oyama Lake.
According to witnesses, black smoke was seen coming from the ridge above the lake at about 6 p.m.
Social media posts show helicopters and water bombers arriving on scene and attacking the blaze.
BC Wildfire Service confirmed they are aware of the new wildfire, and crews are responding.
This is the second wildfire in two days sparked near Oyama Lake.
Another fire west of the lake was discovered Monday, and is still classified as out of control, according to Fire Information Officer Shaelee Stearns.
Stearns said ground crews, along with a helicopter, have been working to get the blaze under control, and they made “good progress” on Tuesday.
That fire was started by lightning, and is only about 20 by 20 metres in size, according to Stearns.
