At least nine cases of the highly infectious Delta coronavirus variant who were vaccinated against COVID-19 only exhibited mild or asymptomatic infection, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said four Delta variant cases have been confirmed to be fully vaccinated, five had received one dose, 24 were unvaccinated, while 86 others were still under verification.
Among the nine partially and fully vaccinated Delta variant cases, six experienced mild COVID-19 infection and three were asymptomatic.
Vergeire also said two of the three Delta cases who died were unvaccinated, while the vaccination status of one other fatality was still being verified.
“Based on this, although we are saying na hindi pa naman po kumpleto ang pag-aaral, nakikita natin (studies are not yet complete but we can see that) vaccines work,” she said in a briefing.
Citing anecdotal reports from hospitals, Vergeire said fewer health workers have been contracting COVID-19 and those who do get sick and hospitalized are unvaccinated.
Vergeire added the DOH is working on a “mini” study on the impact of COVID-19 vaccines on infections.
The Philippines has logged 1,773 Alpha cases, 2,019 Beta cases, 119 Delta cases, and two Gamma cases as of July 24.
The government earlier tightened restrictions in Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Davao del Norte, and Davao de Oro amid the threat of the Delta variant. — RSJ, GMA News
